Golden Visa or ARI

 

The Authorization of Residence for Investment Activity (ARI) regime, in effect since the 8th of October 2012, allows citizens of other countries, to obtain a temporary authorization of residence in Portugal for investment activities, with a residence visa waiver to enter Portuguese national territory. Making possible:


- Entering Portugal with a residence visa waiver; 
- Reside and work in Portugal, with the constraint that the citizen stays in Portugal for a period not inferior to 7 days in the first year and not less than 14 days in subsequent years; 
- Circulate through the Schengen area without a visa; 
- Benefit from family reunification; 
- Request the granting of permanent residence permit following the terms of the Portuguese law; 
- Possibility to request and obtain Portuguese nationality, through naturalization, fulfilling the other requirements in the Portuguese Nationality law.

 

Citizens of other countries can apply for a residence permit for investment Activity in Portugal, fulfilling one of the following requirements:

- The transfer of capital in an amount equal to or greater than 1 million euros; 
- Creating at least 10 jobs; 
- The acquisition of real estate in amounts greater than or equal to 500 thousand euros;
- The purchase of buildings with more than 30 years or located in areas of urban rehabilitation, with rehabilitation works in total value equal to or greater than 350 thousand euros.
- The transfer of capital in an amount equal to or greater than 350 thousand euros for public or private national institutions of scientific research;
- The transfer of capital in an amount equal to or greater than 250 thousand euros for investment or artistic production support, recovery and maintenance of the national cultural heritage;
- The transfer of capital in an amount equal to or greater than 500 thousand euros invested in the purchase of participation units in investment funds or venture capital for small and medium capitalization companies.
On the acquisition of real estate, the ARI applicant must submit:
- Title of purchasing or purchasing real estate promise, with the record statement of a financial institution authorized to develop its activity in Portuguese territory, attesting the effective transfer of capital for purchase or to an effective purchasing promise, in amounts greater than or equal to 500 thousand euros; 
- Updated Certificate of real estate registry, which should always include, in the case of acquisition promise contracts and when legally feasible, the respective registration.
